In 1995, owners, CEOs, and senior leaders from some of the most established Destination Management Companies came together with a shared vision: the industry needed a unified voice. Following a series of exploratory meetings, they formed what was then known as ADME—The Association for Destination Management Executives.
Originally structured as an individual membership organization, ADME was built to represent and elevate the role of the DMC within the broader travel and meetings industry.
As the industry evolved, so did the association. ADME transitioned from an individual membership model to a company-based structure—reflecting how DMCs operate—and expanded beyond the United States to become a truly global organization. With that growth came a new name: the Association of Destination Management Executives International (ADMEI).
ADMEI has established the frameworks and credentials that shape the profession:
Best Practices in Destination Management Originally published in 2011, this resource established the first comprehensive framework outlining the standards and professional practices of DMCs. In late 2024, ADMEI released the Second Edition—updated with insights from global industry leaders to reflect today’s evolving landscape. It serves as the foundation for ADMEI’s education programs and reinforces the association’s role in defining the profession.
